I love different times of year on the farm for different reasons. While winter is my least favorite season – there are a few things about it I enjoy… One is garden planning for the next year! I love to spend time with seed catalogs, pouring over sales data and customer requests, and dreaming about all the happy plants what will be growing wonderful, tasty food in several months time!
This year I am looking at a few changes and new varieties. One exciting thing in 2013 was our dry beans trial. Not only did the beans do nicely in our soils, but they flew off our table at market early this winter. We are thinking about expanding from two to four varieties of dry beans and growing more serious quantities. Let us know if you have a favorite – but right now we are thinking of growing Black turtle and Kenearly Yellow Eye again as well as adding Vermont cranberry and Light Red Kidney beans to the selection we offer. We are planning on growing even more volume of our four varieties of beets and extra sweet potatoes as both are so very popular! New items this next year also include test runs of fillet beans (like string beans but very slender and string-less), watermelon radish, and miniature teardrop shaped cabbage!
While we grow spinach every year, it is typically a spring crop. This year we plan to keep it going all season as we finally mastered germination indoors during the hot months! You spinach lovers should be pleased to find spinach at our booth grown without chemicals like all our product through significantly more of the season this year!
It’s time for me to finish this post up and bury my nose back in my seed orders – but if there is something we doing grow that you really have been craving drop us a line using the contact form on the website and let us know!
